The medal is sold together with the original typed transmittal letter from regimental headquarters at Lilllooah, dated 15 April 1930, forwarding the medal to the recipient - and a scarce seen award documentMedal verification: The medal was awarded to Private Charles Eugene Radcliffe, of the 1st Battalion East Indian Railway Regiment (Auxiliary Force India) on 12 December 1929, as published in Indian Army Order No. 809 of 1929The East Indian Railway Regiment had its origins dating back to 1869, in which year it was raised as the East Indian Railway Volunteer Rifle Corps, after. With the establishment of the Auxiliary Force India in 1920, the descendent unit was renamed The East Indian Railway Regiment. In 1932, the regiment comprised three battalions (reduced to two in 1933), as under:- 1st Battalion: Headquarters at Lillooah- 2nd Battalion: Headquarters at Jamalpur (including an 'Armoured Train')- 3rd Battalion: Headquarters at LucknowClaude Eugene Radcliffe, son of George Gillespie Radcliffe (a Customs Officer Bengal Customs Department with the Preventive Service and Salt Department, Calcutta Port) and Ellen Elevina Radcliffe (nee Syers) was a Eurasian from a Calcutta based family whose parental English ancestor Major James Hindley Radcliffe of the 21st Bengal Native Infantry served in India in the late 18th Century and who died from wounds at the Battle of Bhurtpoor in 1805). Claude was born in Fort William, Calcutta, British India, on, 7 September 1882. He later obtained an appointment with the East Indian Railway Company, and was described as 39 years of age, employed as an 'Assistant Foreman' with the E.I.Railway, residing at Lillooah, when he married Marie Gertrude Aviet (32), at Calcutta on 12 January 1932. The couple were subsequently blessed with a son Claude Aubrey Radcliffe (b. 28/01/33) and a daughter Gloria Mercia Radcliffe (b. 22/08/35). Post independence, the Radcliffe family relocated to the United Kingdom, where they arrived to take up permanent residence in 1955. Claude Eugene Radcliffe is recorded to have died in Kingston upon Thames, London, England, on 13 November 1965The medal toned with patinaCondition: Toned GVF
