Basis the recipient held the rank of Private (and not Trooper, Gunner or Sapper) J. Mendes, would have been a volunteer member of The Bombay Battalion', which was one of the 4 x A.F.I. units that comprised the The Bombay Contingent (Auxiliary Force India). The individual units of The Bombay Contingent, in 1939 were:- The Bombay Patrol- No.10 (Bombay) Battery, R.A., A.F.I.- No.3 (Bombay) Fortress Company, R.E., A.F.I.- The Bombay BattalionThe recipient, Private J.
