The recipient Man Singh was a Jat Hindu Indian soldier from the Punjab, who held the rank of Sowar (Trooper) while serving with the 14th Murray's Jat Lancers, a cavalry regiment of the British Indian Army14th Murray's Jat Lancers: The regiment was originally raised in 1857 at Aligarh as an irregular cavalry unit, at which time it was styled as the 'Jat Horse Yeomanry'. The regiment was raised by Captain John Irvine Murray a Scottish officer in the service of the East Indian Company's Bengal Presidency Army. The unit became popularly referred to as Murray's Jat Horse, and served with considerable distinction during the Second Afghan War, for which the regiment received 3 x Battle Honours. Shortly after the Great War - during which the regiment had served on the North West Frontier and In Mesopotamia - the 14th Murrays Jat Lancers were amalgamated with the 15th Lancers (Cureton's Multanis) in 1921, to become briefly the 14th/15th Lancers. On, 21 July 1922 they were designated as 20th Lancers. In 1937, the regiment was withdrawn from the 'Order of Battle' and was assigned the role of the permanent training regiment for the 3rd Indian Cavalry Group, and was stationed at Lahore CantonmentCondition: VF
