Like his father before him, Thomas Pattinson Hawkrigg described himself as a Farmer and Boarding House Keeper, his residence in the 1911 and 1921 National Census for England & Wales shown as the Royal Oak Hotel, Rosthwaite, in the Borrowdale Valley of the Lake District.
