The decoration was instituted in 1957, and awarded in three classes. It is primarily awarded for long, meritorious and distinguished service, and restricted in award to Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO's) of the Pakistan Armed ServicesThe decoration was conceived to mirror the former awards of the Order of British India (awarded in two classes), that had stopped being awarded in the wake of independenceThe awards are worn from a neck riband1st type insignia have with non-enamelled obverse 'Crescent & Moon' centres and are of larger 47mm dimension.
