GV 1st issue (Recipients extant service papers held & accessible at The British Library confirm & refer)Martin Henry Vincent Carney, son of Irish professional soldier Martin Carney (from the parish of Turlough, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Ireland, where he was born in 1835) and Ann 'Annie' Elizabeth Carney (nee Fisher, and daughter of James Fisher a soldier in the 11th Regiment of Foot) was a native of Exeter, Devonshire, England, where he was born on 21 May 1876. Like his father and maternal grandfather, Martin Henry Carney joined the British Army in 1894, and was posted to the family regiment the 'Devonshire Regiment', also known as the 'Bloody Eleventh'. After service in the South African War (for which he received 2 x medals & 5 clasps), Martin subsequently served with 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment in British India. On 11 July 1905, while based at the Shahjahanpur Cantonment (Uttar Pradesh) he married Violet May Woods (19 years of age) in the Lucknow 'Civil Lines'. At the time of his marriage Martin was holding the rank of Colour-Sergeant and was 28 years of age. Military service and life in British India, was evidently of considerable appeal to Colour-Sergeant Carneyt, as he subsequently transferred from the British Army for attachment to the Indian Miscellaneous List, and posting to the Indian Ordnance Department (later Indian Army Ordnance Corps). Martin and Violet were blessed with 2 x daughters born in British India, viz Shelagh M. Carney (b 1912.) & Doreen C. Carney (b.1914). Marin Henry Carney was first commissioned on1 March 1926, and was promoted to Captain (Deputy Commissary) Indian Army Ordnance Corps on 1 March 1929. He retired from military service on 31 March 1931.The 1939 National Register for England and Wales records Captain Carney living with his wife and daughter Shelagh (described as a Governess) at their residence located at Hendon, Middlesex, England, at which time Martin is recorded as employed with A.R.P. Bristol (Air Raid Precaution, Bristol). Martin Henry Vincent Carney of, 37 Glendale Avenue, Edgeware, Middlesex, England, is recorded to have died at The Memorial Hospital Carlton Road, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, England on, 3 April 1955.
