Formidable on New Years Day 1915!Henry William Hopkins, eldest son of Henry Hopkins (a 'Butcher') & Jane Hopkins (nee Wayman), was a native of Sandwich, Kent, England, where he was born on, 20 March 1875, Prior to joining the Royal Navy, Henry had bene employed as a 'Domestic'. He joined the Royal Navy on 16 September 189, on which date he held the 'Rate' of Boy Second Class. He subsequently served on a wide variety of ships and shore based establishments Later advanced to Petty Officer First Class on 8 January 1907, and awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 4 February 1908. During his service afloat in the Persian Gulf, he served aboard H.M.S. Perseus from 19 December 1911 to 19 September 1913. He joined the battleship, H.M.S. Formidable on, 24 June 1914, and remained as a member of crew through to the time of his death. Petty Officer Hopkins 'Killed-in-Action' on 'New Year Day', 1 January 1915, when Formidable was torpedoed and sunk by U-24 off Lyme Regis; out of a crew of 780, there were fewer than 200 survivorsThe supreme sacrifice of Henry William Hopkins is commemorated in perpetuity by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, with his name and service details engraved upon the Chatham Naval MemorialCondition: About EF
