The medal register shows LSGC awarded 1934 and sent to the recipient at H.M.S. Colombi in Ceylon ColonySimian Baptista Pereira was an indigenous Goan of the Christian faith born in the Portuguese Colony of Goa, India, on 11 November 1885. Prior to joining the Royal Navy in Colombo, Ceylon Colony - Simian was employed as a 'Private Valet'. Simian joined the Royal Navy at Colombo, Ceylon Colony, on 18 September 1911. His attestation notes him as a 'man of colour'. Joining H.M.S. Philomel he served with her while she was patrolling the Persian Gulf, hunting slavers and gun runners from the lower Persian Gulf through the 'Horn of Africa' and the Somali CoastHe joined the Light-Cruiser H.M.S. Dartmouth 8 April - 19 July 1914, which appears to have been an unhappy assignment as while his character was classed as 'Very Good' his 'Ability' was graded 'Inferior' curiously he is shown after this as posted to 'Shore' but with no ships or base indicated - he certainly did not qualify or was awarded any 1914-15 Star - and suggests that he was on 'Home Furlough' in the period 1915-16. He next recorded posting was briefly to Royal Navy Depot Bombay, 14-16 November, prior to entering theatre of war 'Mesopotamia', where he was joined H.M.S. Dalhousie (R.I.M. Transport) which in the period 1917-18 was acting as the Depot Ship for the gunboat flotilla plying the great waterways - in particular the Tigris river - and littoral of Mesopotamia (present day Iraq), where British Naval Forces were deployed against the enemy forces of the Turkish Ottoman Empire. Simian served aboard the insect-class gunboats H.M.S. 'Tarantula' 17 November 1917- 18 March 1918, and then with H.M.S. 'Moth', 19 March 1918 to 10 April 1919. Returning to his 'Home' Division or Port of 'Colombo', Simian continued to serve ashore and afloat on bases and ships of the East Indies Squadron. Simian, still recorded as being with the Colombo Division', re-enlisted in the Royal Navy on 27 July 1935 with the service number G./L.X.21866, his final service sheet has the remark 'N. Service 1939-45' - whether this means no service or Naval service is unclearCondition: About GVF
