Description
Original German WWII Fire Police (Feuerschutzpolizei) Sleeve Eagle City Of Metz-Metz is a city in northeastern France, near the border with Germany. It is the capital of the Moselle department in the Grand Est region of France. However, Metz was part of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918, and again occupied by Germany from 1940 to 1944 during World War II. Because of this, it has a Germanic-sounding name and a lot of German historical influence, but Metz is firmly a French city today. This rare Feuerschutzpolizei sleeve eagle is constructed of bright pink machine embroidery, featuring a national eagle with outstretched wings clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, all enclosed within a large oval oak leaf wreath. The top of the wreath bears the town name 'Metz', indicating issue for the occupied French city during the WWII period. The insignia is sewn onto an oval-shaped dark blue wool backing. While the wool backing exhibits a notable number of moth holes throughout, it remains in good overall condition. A scarce and desirable example of a Fire Police sleeve eagle from German-occupied France.
