Original Third Reich Gold Grade Sturmabteilung (SA) Sports Badge By Bonner Kunstabzeichen-Instituted on November 28, 1933, the SA Sports Badge in Gold was awarded not merely as a sports decoration, but as a service award for individuals who demonstrated consistent physical training, typically instructors or those involved in the physical conditioning program.This example is constructed from a die-stamped tombak base with a gold gilt finish and is a Numbered Type I SA-Sportabzeichen. The obverse features a vertically upright Roman-style broadsword superimposed over a mobile swastika, all surrounded by an eight-segment laurel wreath tied at both sides. The reverse is semi-hollow and stamped with the serial number 157978. The '9' in the serial number is struck over a '6'. It is maker marked 'Bonner Kunstabz.' and 'Bedarf Bonn a/RH', and bears the first pattern inscription used from 1933 to 1935: 'Eigentum D. Chefs D. Ausbidungswesens' (Property of the Head of Physical Conditioning).The badge retains its original hardware with the pin, hinge, and catch all in fully functional condition. It measures approximately 1 13/16 inches wide by 2 5/16 inches tall. The gold gilding is in excellent condition and only shows minor tarnish.A rare and highly desirable early SA award.
