Incredible grouping pertaining to Heer Ritterkreuzträger Hauptmann Hans Loth, captured at Stalingrad, to include formal Hitler signed Knights Cross document, RKT Hauptmann Loth was born on 17 Feb. 1918 in Wuppertal and died on 15 Aug. 2004 in Freienohl, he was awarded the Knights Cross on 25 July 1942 as Leutnant and Zugführer i.d. 10./Inf.Rgt 203 76. Infanterie – Division for attacks against Soviet positions at the Stalin Line, upon recovery from a wound in the battle for Stalingrad, Loth was voluntarily flown into the pocket on 10 January 1943 and then entered Russian captivity as a Hauptmann on 31 January 1943 after suffering his seventh injury, he was released from Russian captivity on 7 April 1949 and thereafter was retrained for work in a lumber mill; the Knights Cross award document folder measures approximately 45x37cm, the cover is covered in deep red Moroccan leather, the cover has a large embossed eagle and swastika inlaid with gold leaf, the edges of the folder have gold colored cross hatches, the interior front and rear covers are of parchment vellum, the award document itself is a single piece of parchment which is held to the spine by a thick and unbroken leather covered cord, the bottom rear edge has the name Frieda Thiersch in small gold letters, the award parchment itself is lettered in brown ink and gold leaf and has Hitler's signature by hand, condition of the Mappe is excellent, further are two original award documents, one for the Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen and the other for Wound Badge in Gold (as Oblt.), in addition there are photocopies of the following award documents: EKII, EKI, Black and Silver Wound Badges plus the Knights Cross preliminary document and the very rare Honor Roll document to Leutnant Loth for actions at Belogorowka in February 1942, there are numerous papers, report cards and sports award documents related to Loth's school years, Loth's Ahnenpass is included, the booklet with photo of Loth in EM M36 uniform for DRL Sports Badge, there is a letter from the Bochum NSDAP office to Loth's mother congratulating her on his award of the Knight's Cross, a letter from the DRK relating to the mother's inquiry about his status, approximately twenty pages of typed wartime reports relating to actions at the front, telegrams and a thick stack of letters, postcards and drawing sent between Loth and his family with the last two letters in the lot being sent to Loth in January 1943 being returned unopened (and still unopened), there are two large stacks of postcards, letters and other correspondence between Loth and family dating from the period when he was prisoner of war, there are two pencil drawings of Loth made by a comrade, one made in 1947 and the other a year later, a large binder relating to Loth's life after freedom are included, documents related to his military career, unit histories, involvement with Bundeswehr, a large binder including correspondence with collectors and those interested in history, postwar Wehrpass with photos, his Ordensgemeinschaft der Ritterkreuzträger membership card with photo and associated letters pertaining to membership in that organization, several civilian award documents and newspaper clippings, a newspaper clipping of the Stalingrad Madonna, further is a family grave marker, Loth's aluminum Erkennungsmarke and four photos, finally there is a ten page document written in English by Loth that colorfully describes his campaigns, actions that led to awards, woundings, the grim situations at Stalingrad and imprisonment; with the exception of the Mappe, the entire set just fits into the large included wartime German ammunition crate, it is metal lined, has iron hinges and rope handles, the remains of paper labels are attached to the inner lid and the front, it would take several hours to view the hundreds of pieces included with the group and longer still to appreciate this brave soldier's place in history, please inquire to info@virtualgrenadier.com for additional information, corrected price, USD $21,000 SOLD
