Compelling set for a Heer Infanterie Oberleutnant recipient of German Cross in Gold and Panzervernichtungsabzeichen that saw service on East (Stalingrad), West and Italian fronts, subject served the entire war and fought in almost every major combat while serving with the 3rd Inf. Div. (motorized), this elite unit fought in the early blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland, France, Russia including the areas of Leningrad and Moscow and was destroyed at Stalingrad, subject survived Stalingrad battle by being on leave when Stalingrad was surrounded, he was part of the newly reformed 3rd (mot) Pz. Gr. Div. and went on to fight in Italy (Salerno, Anzio, Cassino) and West Front battles in France and Germany (Metz, Ardennes, Ruhr Pocket), included is the original issue Soldbuch (August '39) with stapled photo that was carried throughout the entire war, Soldbuch is filled out top-to-bottom with numerous promotions, hospitalization and combat awards including Ostmedaille, EKII, EKI, Infantry Assault badge in Bronze, Close Combat Clasp in Bronze, Black and Silver Wound Badges, German Cross in Gold and the rare award for the Single-handed Tank Destruction badge (awarded at Stalingrad), award documents include Wound Badges in Black and Silver, EK2, Bronze Infantry Assault (rare version for motorized troops), Close Combat Clasp in Bronze, German Cross in Gold, also included are original photos of subject as a Senior NOC as well as January '45 photos of subject wearing all awarded medals including Nahkampfspange, German Cross in Gold and Tank Destruction Badge, further included are subject's official notification of the award of the German Cross in Gold, miscellaneous wartime and post-war personnel documents, in addition there is a wartime German army large color issue field map of Stalingrad with subject's notations marked showing the actual front lines, Soldbuch is worn from much use and a few pages are loose but all are present, the entire set is contained in a binder along with photocopies and written background information from a former owner, an excellent combat groupings for an extraordinarily well-decorated soldier, USD $3400 SOLD
