Original period manufacture. Standard discharge document, issued to Lt. William Johnson of the 63rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted in October 1861, serving as Sergeant Major, until receiving a promotion to 1st Lieutenant in April of 1865. During the Atlanta Campaign, the 63rd participated in the following engagements, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Decatur, Atlanta and Jonesborough. During the war the 63rd suffered the loss of 2 officers and 93 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, with an additional 5 officers and 259 men to disease.
