Description
You are bidding on a SUPERB and EXTRAORDINARILY RARE example of a WW2 Imperial Japanese Army 'Big Eye' 15ร80, 4ยฐ Trench Binocular!Complete and in the ORIGINAL & MATCHING NUMBER Transport Box, and Tripod, this also comes with the UNOBTAINABLE Canvas Covering that acts as camouflage for the entire optics! This periscope style was used throughout the war by Artillery Battery Commanders.Made of solid brass, aluminum, and steel, byNikko(Nikon โ MUCH rarer than the typical 'Toko' versions), this periscope is in AMAZING used condition!Brought back by a US Serviceman, it is a COMPLETE set, retaining98% of the original paint and finish! Some marks and wear, but nothing that detracts. The optics are VERY CLEAR with almost no spotting, however, there are slightly out of collimation (alignment), which is common for this type of optic. It does not affect the functionality. Right eye piece features both a vertical and horizontal reticle/gradient scale that ranges 0-20.The focus adjustments are also functional, but VERY stiff and tight to turn, as the wax has dried up. Heat and lubrication should fix that quite easily, but I will leave that to the winning bidder to rectify. The manufacture information is clearly legible, including the name, 'Nikko', and Serial Number '303'.It also hasvarious knobs for adjustment and fine tuning. A small spirit level and mirror are in the center, and are designed to rotate 360 degrees. All adjustments function 100% correctly! One of the LARGEST periscopes I have owned, they measure approx 9โณ wide and 27โณ tall, with a weight that is just under 30 lbs. Also included are the originalSun Shields(these are usually missing); as well as theLight Filters(still wrapped in the original paper). The includedTan Camouflage CoverI have NEVER seen before! It covers the optics entirely, and allows the user to hide 'out of sight' behind the periscope. It also prevents any sunlight from entering the eyepieces while viewing. Apart from a couple of tiny holes, it is near mint, with all the original markings and Storage Bag.The largeAzimuth(specific to this style of optic) is also included, and very typical of this type, the adjustment knobs/levers are VERY stiff, and will need to be lubricated in order to function correctly. It features a matching name, 'Nikko', and Serial Number '303'. Spirit Level is functional.TheSteel Transport Boxis the original to this set, and features a matching, '303' Serial Number. There is some hand-painted Kanji on the top; and internally, features a Contents List and a hand-written Notation. Apart from the cleaning cloth and optical light, all parts are included. Some marks, wear, scratches, and dents, due to the age. One of the cloth straps that secure the Azimuth is fraying and worn in one area (see photos), but it does not affect the functionality. The wood storage box for the Lens Filters is also present. The Tripod is original to this set, and is made by 'Toko'. It is marked with the individual serial number, '3176'. Some marks, scratches, and wear throughout, however there are no breaks or damage. All adjustments and knobs function correctly, and it still retains the original securing strap.EASILY one of the NICEST and most COMPLETE sets I have owned, it would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
