Description
An attractive oak case 8 day mantle clock, made in England by J. W. Benson, London. Presented in wonderful original condition, in good working order and complete with the key. Unlike many of their other clocks the heavy and robust movement used in this one has a platform escapement operated by a balnce wheel. This makes the clock run in all positions so a perfectly level shelf is not required. The use of such escapements and the clocks reduced dimensions, make portable as a 'Campaign' clock. In fact, everything about this clock is built to last.J.W. Benson, the renowned London watchmaker, has a significant military history, particularly during World War I and World War II. They were official watchmakers to the Admiralty and the War Department and held several Royal Warrants, including one from Queen Victoria. The clock is clean and unrestored, and if it ever was out at a battle front, it survived remarkably well, but this is not suprising given that the case is constructed from a solid oak block. Standing just 8 inches in height it is perfectly proportioned for carriage among an offficer's luggage.
