Description

Here on offer is an unusual vintage RAF Lossiemouth commissioned, Robbie Burns, limited edition white ceramic Scottish Quaich drinking vessel, by W Bates & Co.I believe this Quaich was most likely commissioned by a the Royal Airforce to be used in the senior NCO's mess at RAF Lossiemouth, making it a rare and highly collectable piece. The Quaich (from the Gaelic 'cuach' - cup) is the traditional Scots' drinking vessel for whisky; its distinctive style of shallow bowl and shapely 'lugs' dating its design back to medieval times. On this Quaich there are some decorative gold lines painted on the top of the two lugs, then on the inside of the bowl there is a clear blue transfer printed portrait of Robbie Burns. Associated with Burns, on front edge, also in blue lettering is one of his famous phrases:'O Scotland, but I'll suffer for ye the morn.'The line 'O Scotland, but I'll suffer for ye the morn' is a line from Robert Burns' poem 'Scotch Drink,' written in 1785. The poem uses strong, dialect-filled language to praise whisky, which Burns saw as a symbol of Scottish identity and a source of pleasure despite its potential for causing suffering. The phrase reflects the complex relationship between Scotland, its people, and the hardships associated with the national spirit, even as it brings joy and camaraderie. On the other side of the bowl in blue lettering it states:WO's & SENIOR NCOs' MESSRAF LOSSIEMOUTHRAF Lossiemouth is an active Royal Air Force base and Scotland's only main operating base, serving as a vital hub for Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) and protecting UK airspace 24/7 with Typhoon fighter jets and Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. The base has recently undergone significant upgrades and is home to multiple front-line squadrons. On the base it has the maker's details:W BATES & COSTOKE-ON TRENTENGLANDLIMITED EDITIONIt comes in excellent undamaged condition and makes an unusual RAF Lossiemouth and Robbie Burns related piece for any whisky drinker! It has a 4' (10.2cm) diameter bowl and measures 6.75' (17.2cm), lug tip to lug tip.It weighs 234g.Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description. Please see my TERMS OF BUSINESS regarding Deliver Charges and Insurance regarding additional insurance cover, should you require it, BEFORE the item is dispatched. The responsibility lies with the customer to check with your Customs restrictions that this item can be imported into your country.
