Description
German WWII Signed Photo of Knights Cross Winner Gottfried Tornau-Let me just start out by saying that this guy was a machine. He served with the Division Grossdeutschland and is credited with destroying 40 tanks by the end of the war. He is highly decorated major. The awards include the gold wound badge, which was awarded for 5 or more wounds, being gravely wounded or even given out after death. Amazingly, he survived the war and died in 1992 in Germany. Tornau won his Knights Cross for his actions at Nantikow (Pomerania), where he led a counterattack against a large Soviet armored attack. He and his men halted the hostile offensive and thereby allowed thousands of wounded soldiers (as well as civilians) to flee west. This is a signed photo of him. The photo is in very good condition. It has a name written on the reverse. The photo measures approx. 5 ½ inches long (13.97cm) by 4 inches (10.16cm) wide. This is just the photo, no envelope or note. This guy would be a very fun research project for sure.
