Impressive winter overcoat for an SS-Untersturmführer from 10. SS-Standarte, privately made to a high standard of thick and heavy black doeskin-type wool, it is double breasted with slashed hip pockets with flaps, turn back cuffs, a vented rear skirt and the SS style rear waist belt, lining is of black rayon, there is one large internal breast pocket, inside the pocket is a machine sewn oilcloth label from Uniform Stübben having the former owners name with a Jan. '39 date written in black ink, the coat is set up for wear with a dagger or sword, the single sewn in SS-Untersturmführer to SS-Hauptsturmführer rank shoulder board has silver aluminum cords on a black wool base and a paper RZM tag glued to the reverse, it is held by a small SS RZM marked silver pebbled button, all of the larger silver pebbled buttons are marked Extra Fein RZM, in addition, the small silver pebbled buttons used to fasten the rear skirt are RZM M5/25 marked, the collar is piped in silver twisted cord, the upper right sleeve has a hand applied Ehrenwinkel für Alte Kämpfer chevron, the left sleeve has a multi piece SS wool armband multi piece construction with a black rayon tape swastika machine sewn to a white rayon disk being sewn to the wool armband with black rayon tape borders, it is completely had sewn along all edges, the moleskin fabric blank unit collar patch and the SS-Untersturmführer rank patch are both hand sewn, the silver finished brass rank pips' prongs penetrate the collar, there is no sign of previous insignia, the RZM style sleeve band has the numerals 10 hand embroidered in aluminum wire, the sleeve band was carefully hand sewn to the upper edge of the left turn back cuff, the skirt is hemmed, the coat shows little overt wear internally or externally, the rank pips have lost some of their finish, the armband's white circle shows minor age yellowing, there is some moth tracking to the mid rear seat area and lower skirt plus some insect damage to the lower left cuff edge, weight is approximately 3kg, this particular example is shown on page 44 of the book SS Uniforms, Insignia & Accoutrements by Arthur Hayes (1996), impressive garment, USD $12,500
