Original period manufacture. August 16, 1849 dated document, appointing Ira B. Crandall as a Second Lieutenant in the State Militia of New York. Bold signature at the bottom of the document of Hamilton Fish, then Governor of New York. Hamilton Fish, 1808-1893, served in House of Representatives in the 28th Congress 1843-1845, then as New York Governor 1849-1850, later he served as a Senator from New York in 1851. During the Civil War he served in several important committees including the one regarding prisoner exchange. During the U.S.Grant presidency he served as Secretary of State, 1869-1877, the longest serving cabinet member. The document measures 16 x 10 inches, off set on the page, creased at center.
