Description

Original period manufacture. Clear CDV image of US Navy paymaster George W. Beaman, taken in Lima Peru in 1872. Hand written inscription on the reverse, 'Very truly yours, George Beaman USS Ossipee, March 20 1872'. Born in 1837, died in 1917. He joined the US Navy in 1861, with continuous service to his retirement in 1899, holding the rank of Rear Admiral. A Heritage Auction sale in records his sword and photograph archive in 2007, noting in the description his friendship with Mark Twain. During the Civil War he served aboard the Steam Gunboat USS Seneca and the USS Union. Postwar he was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, badge number 8875.
