A scarce original possibly wartime circa 1941 to 1948 large circular navy felt cloth uniform breast badge with red embroidered 'NFS 31' for the 'National Fire Service Brighton fire force area'. Very good used condition, with evidence of having been removed from uniform.Diameter approx 74mm.The Auxiliary Fire Service was formed in 1938 from unpaid part-time volunteers to supplement the work of the local Fire Brigade units in the time of emergency, it was superseded in 1941 by the National Fire Service, reformed again in 1948 alongside of the Civil Defence Corps and finally disbanded in 1968.
