Circa 19mm in diameter (same size as the one shown in Ripley), fixed shank, maker's mark Jennens & Co, London. Gilt bright, appears to have been lacquered. In superb condition. This pattern, with an appropriate change from QVC to King's Crown, worn from 1855 - 1919. Rare.It was for the most part an all 'other ranks' Corps without their own officers. Officer instructors and administration were posted to the Schools from their parent regiments.The School of Musketry at Hythe was established in 1853 to begin training the Army in the use and application of the rifle-musket. The British Army placed great emphasis on musketry, taking advantage of the tremendous new capabilities of rifle-muskets with expanding bullets. Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers alike attended the course and then were distributed throughout the army for instruction.
