Here on offer is a rare sand cast aluminium tray depicting the then Prince of Wales, Edward VIII, in his Royal Navy uniform, smoking a cigarette. The image of the Prince of Wales is likely taken from a photograph of him signing a visitor's book during a trip to Canada in 1919, as shown in my last photo.Below the image on the tray are the words:OUR PRINCE OF SPORTSOn the bottom of the tray, it has various markings cast into the aluminium, which read as:SAND CASTBYR.W. COAN Ltd219 COSWELL Rd LONDON E.C.1You can also just make out some faint words that actually read as:K.C.P.S.SOUVENIR OF DINNER 1922WITH COMPLIMENTS FROMTHE PRESIDENTROBERT W. COANMy understanding is that the President of an aluminium foundry, Robert W. Coan, hosted a dinner in 1922 (the K.C.P.S. Dinner) that the Prince of Wales attended and at which he was presented with a special aluminium ashtray. This type of small tray was also made by R.W. Coan of London, as a souvenir of that dinner in 1922, but very few were made!Robert W Coan established his business in the early 1900's in London. Pioneers with the artistic use of Aluminium which was relatively new to England at the time. R.W. Coan exhibited at the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 which was a colonial exhibition which ran at Wembley Park from April 23rd 1924 to October 31st 1925.In 1919 the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII became president of the committee organising the event and also had input into the building of Wembley Stadium there in 1923.The tray is in great condition, retaining a lot of the fine detailing to the image. There is a small drilled hole just to the left of his head, possibly for fixing to a display? The tray measures 5.25' (13.3cm) by 3.4' (8.8cm) and weighs 71g.Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description. Please see my TERMS OF BUSINESS regarding Deliver Charges and Insurance regarding additional insurance cover, should you require it, BEFORE the item is dispatched. The responsibility lies with the customer to check with your Customs restrictions that this item can be imported into your country.
