French, Franco-Prussian War Kepi, Garde Nationale Mobile

Sold
$395.00

Description

Original era manufacture. A very well worn example of dark blue wool with red wool piping and cap band. The visor is of molded paper, with an ersatz cloth type lining, which leads me to believe that this kepi was produced during the Fall and Winter 1870-71, when France was desperately trying to put troops into the field to fight the German armies besieging Paris. The kepi displays scattered moth damage, and the visor is coming away from the body on one side, but overall still presents well for display. These old hats are difficult to find in any condition.
