Iron Cross 1st Class of the First World War (Eisernes Kreuz 1st Class). Reinstituted by King Wilhelm II on August 5, 1914, for awarding during the First World War. Both the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Iron Cross 2nd Class were awarded without rank. The second-class medal was awarded to individuals who had performed a single act of heroism in combat. The Iron Cross 2nd Class was required to already possess the Iron Cross 1st Class. The cross has a three-part construction with an iron core; this is a rare type of cross with the so-called cushion-shaped back (Waffelmuster). The cross is beautifully marked with the 'AWS' logo, indicating production by the firm 'Albert Werner & Söhne' of Berlin. The pin and clasp are in perfect condition; the cross has the thin needle, characteristic of this manufacturer. The cross is beautifully domed.
