Description
Iron Cross 1st Class of the First World War (Eisernes Kreuz 1st Class). Reinstituted by King Wilhelm II on August 5, 1914, for awarding during the First World War. Both the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Iron Cross 2nd Class were awarded without distinction of rank. The 2nd Class medal was awarded to individuals who had performed a single act of heroism in combat. The 2nd Class Cross was required to receive the 1st Class Cross. The cross has a three-part construction with an iron core and a silver frame. The cross is beautifully marked with the maker's mark 'WS,' indicating production by Wagner & Sohn of Berlin. The pin and clasp are in perfect condition.
