Description
Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2e Klasse). On September 1, 1939, Hitler reinstituted the Iron Cross (first introduced in 1813). The second-class medal was awarded to individuals who had performed a single act of heroism in combat. The cross is of the early 'Schinkel' type and has a three-part construction. The 'Schinkel' crosses are thinner crosses, mounted in World War I-style frames. The cross is not visibly marked, but can most likely be attributed to the firm 'Wilhelm Deumer,' located in Lüdenscheid. The cross—which still has the neat, so-called 'Hochpolierte Kanten' (Highly Polished Edges)—shows only minor wear and is generally very detailed. A beautiful original 'Schinkel' cross in very good condition!
