Description

Early DLV (Deutsche Luftsport Verband) Dagger (Fliegermesser). On 25 March 1933 the DLV (German Air Sports League) was established by incorporating all civilian flying clubs into one organization. In September 1933 the DLV was further enlarged by incorporating the SA and SS Fliegersturm groups. The DLV was utilized as a camouflage civilian organization to train personnel for the future Luftwaffe. This is a nice early DLV Glider Pilot's Dagger, often called 'Fliegermesser'. Originally the early daggers were produced utilizing nickel/silver fittings until 1936 when the early fittings were replaced with polished natural aluminum fittings. This is an early example with nickel/silver fittings. The dagger has an in dark blue leather covered grip. One end of the crossguard is stamped with the letter 'K'. One of the small enamel swastikas is showing some minor damage caused by wear, see photos. The blade is in good used condition, the reverse ricasso is well marked with the etched manufacturer's marking indicating production by the company 'SMF' from Solingen. The leather scabberd is having nickel/silver plated fittings and is complete with original early leather hangers. The inlet of the scabbard has a DLV acceptance stamp. The dagger is in overal very good condition showing normal traces of usage, see photos. Nice and hard to find early example!
