Crimea Medal, clasp: SEBASTOPOLNamed to: CAPTN W.CAPELLE CLARKE 23 RDR.W.FUSRS.Medal about good very fine.(Hunt and Roskill style naming in small, neatly engraved capitals)Medal and clasp confirmed on roll.Details as follows supplied with medal:William Caple Clarke was born 8th April, 1832 in Watford,the son of Thomas Turesdale Clarke Esq.J.P. of: Swakeleys,Milddlesex and wife Jane Selina, the eldest daughter of the Hon.Rev.William Robert Capel,vicar of Watford and and Chaplain to the Queen, and Granddaughter of the 4th Earl of Essex.He then purchased his commission(vice Howell retired) at the age of 19 as 1st Lieut the 18th April 1851, in the 23rd (Royal Welsh Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot, and served at the depot.He then saw service in Canada and was promoted Lieut.the 10th December 1854.He was then posted to the 1st Btn.,and joined the battalion in the Crimea the 18th November, 1854 and was present at the battle for Sebastapol. Was promoted Captain the 29th December 1854.He resigned his commission on the 8th June,1855 and returned home.He married Clara (the daughter of Thomas Thornhill of Fixby and Riddlesworth, Norfolk) on 20th November 1855 and assumed the additional name and arms of Thornhill.
