A Truly poignant family group to three brothers from Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset.1) 1914-15 trio & Memorial plaqueTo- 12640.PTE.E.J.INKPEN.DORSET.RErnest John Inkpen first landed in France 1-7-1915 serving with the Dorset regiment. He transferred to the Royal Engineers with service number 173268 & died in Egypt 9-9-1916 serving with the 276th Railway company, Heavy Artillery brigade, Royal Engineers. He was 21 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Ismailia war cemetery.2) WW1 Memorial PlaqueTo- Walter.Inkpen11001 Private Walter Inkpen first landed in theatre of war 2B The Balkans / Gallipoli 11-7-1915 serving with the 5th battalion of the Dorset Regiment & was sadly killed in action on Gallipoli 21-8-1915. He was 28 years of age at the time of his death & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Helles memorial.3) WW1 Memorial PlaqueTo- Bertram Inkpen.12551 Private Bertram Inkpen was killed in action in France & Flanders 18-8-1916 age 18 serving with the 1st battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. He has no known grave & as such he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial to the missing on the Somme.All three men were born & lived in Shillingstone, Dorset & enlisted in Dorchester. They are all recorded by the CWGC as the late sons of Mr.J.R.B. Inkpen & Mrs M Inkpen of Shillingstone, Blandord, Dorset.All items are NEF or better & come complete with a superb photographic archive that includes images of all three men & other members of the family. The recipients father served with the Gordon Highlanders in the Egypt campaign of 1882. He was introduced to the Prince of Wales (later king Edward the 8th) whilst at a British Legion review in Dorset. The old man was wearing his own medals & the two trios & the pair as awarded to his late sons. The Prince spoke to him at length at said it was jolly hard luck to lose his three boys. photographic images of the meeting are included in the archive along with an original newspaper cutting about the meeting.A truly superb family group.
