Portuguese Lion Head Naval Officer Sword with Portepee

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 38 inches, with a blade length of approximately 30 inches. The blade has a matte finish and it is very clean, showing some spots and small inclusions, but making a very fine appearance. A red felt washer is in place at the top of the ricasso. The white sharkskin grip exhibits surface soiling from carrying wear. The rear of the sword has a folding guard. The guard, knuckle bow, lion head pommel, and back strap all have a dark and uncleaned patina over the gilt surfaces. Tied to the top of the guard is a gold bullion portepee that shows age toning and some frayed spots, but it is complete and intact. The leather scabbard is sound and without cuts or damage, while the scabbard fittings, like the sword fittings, have a dark patina. Attached to one of the scabbard rings is the inventory tag of a corporate collection. Overall excellent condition.
