1830's / 1840's US Militia Staff Officer's Sword With Indian Princess Pommel

Description

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 35 inches, with a blade length of approximately 28-1/2 inches. The blade has a generally gray cast with dark spots and pitting on the lower third section of the blade. The upper third of the blade has etched decorative designs on both sides. There is gilt embellishment remaining visible beneath the langets on each side. The grip of the sword is mother of pearl on each side, and the grip sections are without chips or cracks. The obverse langet displays a relief open wing American eagle . The pommel is an Indian head in bonnet. The brass guard, knuckle bow, and the pommel show an uncleaned patina.The brass scabbard also shows a dark and uncleaned patina, with a hanging chain remaining affixed to the scabbard.
