He served onboard HMS Monarch during the Boer war & on the 10th of November 1900 he rescued a member of the R.M.L.I who fell overboard from HMS Tamar at the entrance of the Bony river West Africa. There was a strong tide & the locality abounds with sharks. At great risk Reed jumped in & supported him until he was picked up by a boat. This resulted in the award of the Royal Humane society medal in Bronze. Sadly he was serving onboard HMS Defence at the battle of Jutland & was killed in action at Jutland when HMS Defence was sunk 31-5-1916. He was 35 years of age at the time of his death & having no known grave other than the sea. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval memorial. The CWGC state that he was the late son of Harry & Emily Reed of Plymouth & the late husband of Eliza Jane Reed of 92 Hotham place, Millbridge, Stoke, Devonport.GVF / NEF & Complete with the recipients RHS swimming medallion dated 1906.
