You are bidding on an EXCELLENT used example of a WW1 PrussianS98/05 mS (n.A.) Seitengewehr SawbackBayonet! Primarily issued to Pioneers, MG Detachments, and Specialized Troops, it comes complete with the original scabbard and frog!The Sawback Butcher Bayonet was designated as the S98/05 S or m.S. (mit Säge – with saw). During WW1, the Sawback got the reputation for being an extremely dangerous weapon that could cause severe injury. Through an allied propaganda campaign designed to make the blade seem inhumane, the Germans decided to remove the saw teeth and suspended production in 1917. Many examples found today had the teeth ground off, as soldiers that were captured with a Sawback bayonet, were often harshly treated (and this alone gave g ood reason to grind the teeth off).Made of steel, this Second Pattern Prussian S98/05 mS (n.A.) Sawback Bayonet is in VERY NICE condition considering its age. Features the manufacture stamp,Möve-Werke Walter & Co., Mühlhausen in Thüringen',one of the lesser-seen wartime contractors. Fullsawback teeth and shows light surface wear, with NO corrosion or damage. Retains the original factory edge. Grips are tight, with no looseness or cracks, and the pommel and spine retain an Imperial crown inspection proof…confirming acceptance at a Prussian ordnance office.The scabbard is original to this knife, and matches in condition, with various marks and wear throughout. A RARE maker, it would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
