Description

You are bidding on a SUPERB and VERY RARE example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe Pilot and Navigator Hanhart Chronograph Wrist Watch! This is the EARLY single pusher variant. At the outbreak of WW2, navigator and pilot watches were put into full production. The German government contracted many manufacturers to build pilot chronographs, with the two most popular being Uhrenfabrik AG Tutima of Glashutte, and Hanhart of Schwenningen. Both similar in appearance, several variants were produced. Some variations include a Gold Gilded Movement, and Rotating Bezels with either a red line or arrow. With the chronograph function, the pilot was able to calculate precise time in 30 minute intervals. They were issued according to a pilot's mission requirements, and when no longer needed (for example if a pilot was injured), they were returned to stores. The requirements for this watch were black dials for clear visibility, luminous hands, and Arabic numerals.Backs were to be screwed, in order to prevent dirt and moisture from entered the case. These early single-pusher 'Fliegerchronograph' wristwatches were issued to flight and bomber crews, later evolving into the two-button Cal. 41 design used throughout the war. The Hanhart Cal. 40 features a true flyback chronograph, allowing pilots to instantly reset and restart timing sequences – an essential tool for navigation and bombing runs. Early examples like this, without external serial engraving, represent some of the first operational Luftwaffe chronographs produced. This Luftwaffe Chronometer Wrist Watch was produced by Hanhart, Schwenningen, circa 1941, and is in VERY NICE functioning condition! This type isfeatured on page 362 of Dr. Konrad Knirim's, 'Military Timepieces book. This is the early single pusher variant, and is original and untouched (unrestored). The casing features approx 75% original finish, and though there are some very slight scratches and some very minor wear throughout, it is otherwise near PERFECT!The black radium-luminous dial and gilt cathedral hands are near mint, with all luminous material present and evenly patinated, with NO paint loss! The crystal is original and shows period-correct crazing but no replacement or polishing. The nickel-plated brass case retains MUCH of its plating with only light age wear and tiny, superficial pitting along the sides and edges. The case back is marked 'BODEN EDELSTAHL – WASSERGESCHÜTZT – STOSSFEST.' No serial number on the back, which is consistent with early single-pusher production examples, which were often issued before standardized Luftwaffe serial engraving was introduced later in the war. I was unable to open the back, however themovement is a PERFECT example of a wartime calibre (40 calibre). Some light scratching on the back. This is 100% FUNCTIONAL in every way, however, I do not know when it was serviced last. One of the rarest and sought-after chronographs produced during the war. An AMAZING and 100% ORIGINAL example, PERFECT for any collection or display!
