BRITISH WAR MEDAL TO CAPTAIN REGINALD JOSEPH WOOSTER-R.A.M.C. (ATTACHED RIFLE BRIGADE)-KILLED IN ACTION ON 15TH SEPTEMBER 1916

British War Medal, named to:CAPT.R.J.WOOSTER.Medal about good very fine, on original stitched ribbonCaptain Reginald Joseph Wooster Royal Army Medical Corps was killed in action on 15th September, 1916.The Son of J.R.and Ellen Wooster of 3, Woodville Gardens, Ealing, London. Late House Surgeon and House Phycision, St.Mary's Hospital, Paddington. He is commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial.Reginald was educated at St.Paul's School,London and St.Mary's Hospital, Paddington, where he qualified in 1911.Having volunteered for active service when War broke out,he was gazetted temporary Lieutenant on 26th October, 1914, then arrived in France on 18th March, 1915.He was then promoted to Captain.He first served at no 9 General Hospital, Rouen, then transferred to the 43rd Field Ambulance.He then became the Medical Officer for the 9th Rifle Brigade and was killed in the 2nd battle of The Somme.His commanding Officer wrote to his Family: 'He very gallantly went forward with the attack and I saw him dressing the wounded after crossing the first line of the German trenches;after that he must have gone right forward, and I hear that he working magnificently when he and his medical orderly were hit by a shell.I know that you will have great pride that he fell when working right out in the open,and well (nearly a mile) inside what had been German ground less than an hour before.It is not every Medical Officer who volunteers to go right forward as he did' (Royal Army Medical Corps in The Great War)
