The recipient Newal Sing Ghale, was a Nepalese soldier of Gurkha ethnicity and the Hindu faith, who held the rank of Rifleman while serving with 1st Battalion 4th Gurkha Rifles of the British Indian ArmyFollowing the independence of India, the 4th Gurkha Rifles Regiment is one six Gurkha Rifles Regiments (the others were 1 GR, 3 GR & 5 RGR, 8 GR & 9 gr) of the former British Indian Army that continue to serve in the Indian Army. After becoming a Republic in 1950, all the Gurkha Rifles regiments of the Indian Army lost their former British royal titles and associations, and were restyled as 'Gorkha Rifles'Condition: VF
