You are bidding on an EXCELLENT example of a WW1 German / Prussian LATE-WAR Gewehr 98 ErsatzCombat Bayonet! It comes complete with the original and matching scabbard!Designed as an emergency substitute for the standard Mauser bayonets during material shortages of 1915–1917. These all-steel bayonets were quickly produced for use with the Gewehr 98 rifle, featuring a simple one-piece steel hilt and blade construction that could be manufactured rapidly without the use of scarce materials like wood or brass.Made of steel, this late-war Prussian/German Combat Bayonet in SUPERB condition considering its age. This particular bayonet retains its original pressed-steel grip and matching steel scabbard, both showing honest age and light surface oxidation. The blade has a bright patina with light wear and remains full length with no major damage. Some oil stains, but it has never been sharpened. The hilt and crossguard are tight, and markings are visible near the base of the blade. The scabbard finish shows typical wartime wear with small areas of pitting but no structural cracks or repairs.There are some slight marks, wear and corrosion due to the age, but otherwise is otherwise quite solid. Also appears to have been re-painted at one time. The steel scabbard/frog is also original to this knife, and condition matches the blade. Would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
