The recipient Ram Singh was an Indian soldier of the Sikh faith, who held the rank of Sepoy (Private) while serving with the 3rd Battalion (Rattray's Sikhs) 11th Sikh Regiment , of the British Indian ArmyRegimental Chronology: 3/11 Sikh's had it's origins in 1856.
