Cause of death was disease from 'Dysentery'Medal & Clasps Verification: The medal and clasp is confirmed as entitled per the respective campaign medal roll of 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade WO 100/33Important: A search of the medal roll WO,100/33 shows that there were 2 x persons with the surname Griffiths and forename initial 'T' - that served with 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade. Both were Privates vis:- No. 3787 shown as landed in the Crimea on 28 November 1854, and shown on medal roll as 'Died' 20 January 1855- No. 3935 shown as landed in the Crimea on 27 January 1855Reference book 'Rifle Green in the Crimea' (George Caldwell & Robert Cooper, 1994), the authors wrote below pertaining to the fate of the majority of the reinforcement draft of men of the 1/Rifle Brigade who landed in the Crimea on that ill-fated day, 28 November 1854:Quote,Winter in the CrimeaOn the 28th November 1854 a draft of 1 Sergeant 1 Corporal and 46 Rifleman landed in the Crimea; these men of all the drafts for the Rifles suffered more than any other. They came straight into the winter with no chance to harden to the conditions, twenty died,, fourteen others either died or returned home sick, a total of thirty four from the forty eight.UnquoteRifleman T. Griffiths, whose medal we are offering for sale, was one of the above ill-fated draft.....We are attributing this medal to the casualty, basis the medal being officially impressed and that it is in much better condition than to medals awarded to soldiers who survived the Crimean War and would almost certainly have handled and worn their medals.....Condition: GVF
