Description
German WWII HJ Knife w/Motto by C. LĂŒtters & Co-This is a good starter knife for a new collector. This is an early HJ knife with a motto by an early maker, a maker we don't see very often. This Hitler Youth knife retains 90% of its nickel silver finish on the pommel and hilt. The buffer is in place under the crossguard, but it is loose. The checkered grip plates are very good, but please look at the photos as there is a spot of paint on the reverse. The HJ enameled diamond is sound condition, though it does have a scuff on its face on the lower red enamel. Please see photos. The scabbard has lost almost all of its original black paint. The remaining steel has become a brown color that almost looks like it has anodized. It is a very interesting look. There is some black finish remaining on the reverse of the scabbard. The blade is in sound condition. It shows the motto, and it is a good etch that is readable. However someone has beat the heck out of this blade, it does show where it may have been nicked and sharpened. This is what happens when you give a 14 year old a knife, I guess. The C. LĂŒtters & Co lion logo can be seen on the reverse. Again, a scarcer maker that we do not see very often. This has a leather retaining strap that works as it should. An interesting knife, and a good affordable way for a collector to get a HJ knife with a motto. A good placeholder.History: The Hitler Youth Knife (Hitlerjugend Fahrtenmesser) was introduced in the summer of 1933, shortly after the Nazi seizure of power in Germany. It was produced by a multitude of manufacturers and could be purchased from authorized shops for a price of 4 Reichsmarks. It was used not only as a dress sidearm, but as a functional camping tool, and these were commonly sharpened by their original owners. The earliest examples bore the motto of the Hitler Youth, 'Blut und Ehre!' (Blood and Honor), etched on the blade. The blades on these early knives were marked with commercial manufacturer logos. They had nickel silver handles, and anodized metal scabbards. The use of the etched motto was discontinued in August 1938. Later HJ knives had nickel plated steel handles, painted scabbards, and the maker logos were replaced with an RZM code along with the year of manufacture. There are also transitional types that still have the etched motto but have dates on the blade ricasso. Manufacture of these knives is believed to have ceased around 1942. All HJ knives have the diamond emblem of the Hitler Youth on the handle.Online checkout is not supported for edged weapons. Please note that some items are listed as 'SOLD OUT' for this reason.
