Description
A WW1 1914 star and British war medal (Victory medal missing) correctly named to 4498 Private Colin Henderson of the 1/6th Renfrewshire battalion, Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders.Colin Henderson was born Neilson Renfrewshire around 1896. He enlisted into the 1/6th territorial battalion in 1914 and after a period of training at Bedford was posted to France, arriving on the 2nd of May 1915, forming part of the 1st Highland Brigade, Highland division, which was a little later renamed the 152nd Brigade, 51st (Highland) Division. The battalion joined the rest of the brigade around Estaires on the River Lys before taking part in the battle of Festubert, where the division attacked with the Canadian division but made little progress in the face of heavy German artillery-fire.On the 12th of June 1916 the 1/6th transferred as Pioneer Battalion to 5th Division. The battalion did not take part on the first day of the battle of the Somme, but were heavily involved in later actions, at High wood, Guillemont, the Battle of Flers-Courcelette and Morval.During 1917 life was just as hard for the 1/6th seeing action at Arras and the third battle of Ypres. At the end of November 1917, the battalion was moved to Italy. Although their time in Italy was brief, they were involved in supporting the front lines and building and maintaining the infrastructure in a support role typical for a pioneer battalion and supporting the Italian army against the Austro-Hungarian forces. They returned to France in April 1918 later converted back to infantry and transferred to 153rd Brigade in 51st (Highland) Division, taking part in the final stages of the war. Colin was demobbed in March 1919 and in November 1920 he was awarded a small pension. Both his medals look like they were mounted and worn at some point, the star has some wear from polishing. Obviously, I have only touched on this man's service, more research is needed on this scarce territorial battalion.
