Description
The sword bayonet has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 25-1/2 inches, with a blade length of approximately 20 inches. The blade shows a somewhat gray cast, with dark spots, but the blade is without nicks, chips, or active rust. The ricasso is stamped with a 'crown' over what appears to be the Gothic letters 'CR, along with the letter 'B' at the reverse ricasso. The solid brass grip shows fine detail and uncleaned patina. The leather scabbard is somewhat dry, but it is complete and intact. These bayonets are distinguished by the unique cutout in the bottom right edge of the muzzle ring to allow it to properly fit the front sights of those two patterns of Winchester muskets. It boasts a fully functional 'locking lug' attachment at the lower handle. The brass fittings on the scabbard show uncleaned patina. Overall very good condition. 1873/76 Winchester rifle muskets [with bayonets] were carried by the 'Hawaii Citizens Guard' during the brief Royalist 'Counter-revolution' revolution of 1895, in which supporters of the deposed Queen Lili'ukalani attempted to overthrow the 'Republic of Hawaii' and restore her to her throne, January 6-9, 1895.
