Description
German WWII Imperial Spike Helmet-This is a beautiful spiked helmet. This helmet is not dated. It is prior to 1916, as the spiked model was discontinued in 1916. The spike on the helmet became a liability, not only was it causing damage to horses, but the leather helmets offered little protection against shell fragments and shrapnel. The conspicuous spike made its wearer a target. The men were ordered to remove their spikes when they were on the frontline. This style was slowly replaced by the stahlhelm. This helmet is made of dark brown boiled leather. It has some minor crazing and fading but is in overall very nice condition. The spike, gorgeous Prussian frontal plate, spike base, spine and visor trim are made of brass. These retain the majority of their original finish and still display excellent details. The silver on the front plate is intact. It shows the crest for Saxony or as it was known then, Sachsen. The spike comes off with ease. The black leather chinstrap and two side cockades are both original. The interior has a black leather liner that is in sound condition, though it does show slight wear and discoloration. It is intact. There is a makers stamp inside on the rear leather neck flap, but it is difficult to make out. This is a size 55. A good looking spiked helmet!
