Description

You are bidding on a VERY NICE used example of a WW1 German Army-issue Revue trench watch. This pattern was government-property marked and worn in the field by NCOs and enlisted troops.During the First World War, the German Army often requisitioned durable Swiss timepieces for military service due to shortages of domestic production, marking them as government property and issuing them to artillerymen, runners, vehicle personnel, and front-line troops. Before purpose-built wristwatches became common, these pocket watches were routinely worn in leather wrist carriers, making them the transitional form between the classic pocket watch and the true trench wristwatch.Founded in 1853 in Waldenburg, Switzerland, Revue Thommen produced high-quality, reliable civilian pocket watches that were widely admired for their robust jeweled movements and precision.Made by Revue of a nickel-silver case, this Swiss-made Trench Watch is in VERY NICE used condition! Features moderate field wear, scattered scratches, and areas of finish loss consistent with age. The most notable condition point is the rear case surface, which shows irregular patches of green verdigris staining and chemical oxidation; this appears to have migrated from prolonged contact with a later leather strap and has left permanent darkened areas. The case itself shows no cracks or structural damage, and the hinged covers operate properly. The dial is enamel is still quite bright, but exhibits a visible hairline crack running outward from the center as well as a patch of white filler material or paint between the '4' and '5,' indicating a past repair. The dial is printed'EIGENTUM DER HEERESVERWALTUNG', which correctly translates to'Property of the Army Administration,'confirming official Government-Issue. The original blued-steel hands remain intact. The crystal is clean overall with minor scratches from use. Te high-quality Revue Swiss movement remains complete, featuring the manufacturer's typical gilt plates, jeweled balance, and dual mainspring layout. The movement shows no missing screws or components and carries the proper period markings. Some green verdigris remains around the pendant and case lip where the strap contacted the metal; this is normal copper-salt oxidation caused by moisture and tannins reacting with brass and nickel components over time (this can easily be cleaned off). The leather wrist carrier is not WW1 but appears to be a later vintage piece (likely 1960s–1980s), made of heavier, thicker leather than period originals, and shows some green staining transferred from the case. A PERFECT addition to any collection or display!
