Description
You are bidding on an SUPERB and EXTREMELY RARE example of an early WW2 German Luftwaffe 10-6702 (HM51) Sauerstoffmaske (Oxygen Mask)!100% AUTHENTIC, with all parts and fittings being the ORIGINAL to this mask. This is NOT a 'restored' or 'refurbished' mask like you see commonly see up for auction on eBay.A VERY SELDOM encountered mask, as used by both fighter pilots and bomber crews!Between 1935 and the end of the war in 1945, the Luftwaffe developed approximately 10 versions of the Oxygen Mask, with almost all being based on the same design with small modifications. The 2 primary manufactures were DrΓ€ger and Auer. Adopted by the Luftwaffe in 1939, the 10-67 replaced the earlier 10-69 design which often had problems with freezing moisture from the exhaled air.Manufactured by Auer in Berlin the 10-6702 was designed for use with the LkpN101 and other flying helmets modified for 3-point mask attachment. Due to its light-weight construction and compact size, it found favour amongst many fighter and fighter-bomber pilots. This mask and hose connected directly to the oxygen regulator, which was located on the starboard side of most aircraft, including the Ju88, He111, Do17, Ju87, Me110, Me410, Me163, and others! This near PERFECT used example Oxygen Mask is made primarily of moulded green rubber, with leather, plastic, and aluminum accessories.Unlike almost all other masks you encounter, this example features the ORIGINAL suede leather internally (almost all you find nowadays are replaced/refurbished as these have dried up or rotten away).Designed to fit snugly over the wearers mouth and nose, it also includes the original elasticized cotton strap, which allowed for secure fitting.Being a 3-point O2 mask, it was made specifically for bomber or high altitude pilots, and attaches to the 3-point flight helmets. All rubber is still sold and soft, with NO cracking.Though there is some dirt and wear, there is NO damage, rust, or corrosion!Being made earlier in the war, it is marked:AUER1067Gr.2Also retains a stamped serial number on the leather frost protector (though faded),and appears to indicate, 'A80181'. The original hose has some heat damage, and as a result, has melted and broken in one spot. Original hoses do come up, if the winning bidder wishes to replace it.This is an AMAZING piece of history, it would make a PERFECT addition toany collection or display!
