Mint boxed 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star & 1939-45 War Medal with the original condolence slipTo- PILOT.OFFICER.W.L.GRAY.William Leslie Gray from South Shields, County Durham originally served as an other rank with the R.A.F.VR with service number 1556205 & was commissioned as pilot officer 21-9-1943. He was serving as the bomb aimer onboard a short sterling with 90 squadron when he was lost with the rest of the 7 man crew on a raid over Germany 31-7-1943. He was 22 years of age at the time of his death & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Runnymede memorial. The CWGC state that he was the late son of William & Ethel Ann Gray of South Shields, County Durham.The box of issue is addressed toE.R.GRAY.ESQ,113 BIRCHINGTON AVENUE,SOUTH SHIELDS,CO.DURHAM.It is worthy of note that his commission was not actually published in the London gazette until 21 days after his demise.EF/MINT & Complete with CWGC details & other basic research details.
