Description
The silk flag is approximately 27 inches by 33 inches. Two corners are reinforced and retain cord ties. The flag has several scattered tiny holes, but overall the flag is in very good condition. The flag bears slogans and declarations which include: 'Continued Luck in the Fortunes of War'; 'Imperial Magnificence Spreads Throughout the Eight Corners [of the World]', which is signed 'Tsuneo'; 'Ugly Shield, I: Student Soldier'(The phrase 'Ugly Shield, I, Student Soldier' is a means of saying 'I am a soldier who will risk my life to serve as a shield (an ugly shield) to protect the Emperor', and it expresses a self-deprecating yet determined willingness to sacrifice for one's country. It was particularly used in wartime Japan to express the spirit of 'sacrificing one's life for one's country without regard for oneself'); 'Sword Marked by Death'; 'A Great Death is the Utmost…This is Nothingness' (meaning exerting oneself to the utmost, and prepared to die if necessary); 'While dying there is life'; 'Life and Death are One'; and 'Soul and Spirit of Japan'.
