German WWII Cased 40 Year Faithful Service Cross, Souvenir, Fall of Port of Brest 1944

Sold
$225.00

Description

Original period manufacture. Standard 40 Year Faithful Service Cross with it's original box of issue. The medal itself is quite clean, suspension bar on the original ribbon. The inner pad bears a period, handwritten inscription, 'General Ramcek (sic) Port of Brest, Brittany France 1944'. The inscription no doubt hints at the finding of the medal & box in the HQ of General Hermann-Barnhard Ramcke, famed Luftwaffe Fallschirmjager officer of WWII. He surrendered the fortress city of Brest on the 19th of September 1944. No doubt the victorious GI's plundered his captured HQ, with this medal forming part of the trophies. Wear to the case, with what looks to be a name on the lid, now blurred and not readable.
