Description
A very attractive and scarce WWII German Luftwaffe M42 helmet, preserved as a classic U.S. GI souvenir helmet with period hand-painted veteran artwork. This helmet is a genuine combat-used Luftwaffe M42, clearly identified by its correct shell form and construction. The original Luftwaffe eagle decal is still clearly visible on the left side, a highly desirable feature for collectors. On the rear of the shell, the helmet is correctly factory-marked 'NS64', indicating manufacture by Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke (NS) and shell size 64, along with the lot number 4655.The helmet was clearly taken as a war trophy by an American soldier who served with the First U.S. Army, which is prominently hand-painted on the front of the helmet, together with 'GERMANY 1945'. On the sides, the countries France, Belgium and Holland are painted, accurately reflecting the combat route of the First U.S. Army during the final stages of the war. These hand-painted inscriptions are typical of authentic GI souvenir helmets and were applied by the veteran himself. On the top of the helmet, traces of an additional inscription are still visible, though largely worn away. This kind of wear is commonly seen on genuine bring-back helmets. As was often the case, many veterans' helmets were taken home to the United States and later used by their children for play, which explains the surface damage and scratches visible on the crown today. This wear tells the honest post-war story of the helmet and strongly supports its authenticity as a true veteran souvenir. The interior liner is very well-used and largely gone, with only a remaining fragment of the original leather liner still present. The inside of the shell retains its original Luftwaffe blue paint, while the exterior has been overpainted in a different blue-grey tone, applied by the veteran, on which the period artwork was added. This helmet is a highly collectible and increasingly hard-to-find example of a genuine WWII souvenir helmet, combining an original Luftwaffe combat shell with authentic U.S. GI veteran paint and markings. Such helmets are especially sought after by advanced collectors due to their personal, historical character and direct connection to the Allied advance into Germany in 1945.A beautiful and honest relic of the final months of World War II.
